Foundation Invests in Early College and Career Pathways

June 2nd, 2017

The Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation is pleased to announce its lead gift of over $2 million to support Lawrence Public Schools in the development of an early college and career pathways pilot program. The grant will allow approximately 200 Lawrence High School students to enroll in college courses this fall, growing to many more in subsequent years. Students will have the opportunity to earn either 24 credits at Northern Essex Community College or 12 credits at Merrimack College as well as the opportunity to participate in internships and work-based learning activities. The project is aligned with the Commonwealth’s recently announced Massachusetts Early College Initiative, which aims to give thousands of Massachusetts students, especially first-generation college-goers, access to college completion and career success.
