Brooke Mattapan Dedication Ushers in New Era for 150 American Legion Highway

October 14th, 2014

Following a dedication ceremony attended by US Representative Joseph Kennedy III, along with school administrators, donors, neighbors and other supporters, the site of 150 American Legion Highway officially entered a new era as Brooke Mattapan Charter School. In his dedication speech, Rep. Kennedy traced the history of the site from its origin as the Home for Jewish Children (1910), to the Hecht House years (1936+), to the day in 1959 when his great-uncle Teddy dedicated the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Gymnasium to his late brother, to the years as the Lena Park Community Development Corporation (1970+), resting at the building’s newest incarnation as Brooke Mattapan Charter School’s permanent K-8 facility. Brooke Mattapan is a college preparatory public school serving 460 students. As part of its grantmaking in urban education, the Smith Family Foundation awarded Brooke a multi-year challenge grant to support the purchase and renovation of 150 American Legion Highway as the school’s new permanent K-8 facility.
