December 21st, 2013

The first cohort of students in the new “Transition to College and Careers” course at the YMCA/International Learning Center has graduated. The 11 graduates hail from nine countries including Brazil, Haiti, El Salvador, Honduras, and Iraq. Supported by a grant from the Smith Family Foundation, this intensive six-month program is open to advanced English language learners in the Greater Boston area who need a serious prep class that incorporates all the skills needed to function successfully in freshman level college classes. The curriculum combines college prep, English language skills, and college-level math and computer skills. College acceptances among the first graduates include the MA College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Urban College, Endicott College, UMass Boston, and Bunker Hill Community College.
